Behind the Chair: The Vault File, Gaby Burger

It's the end of the week and it's been an eventful week here in Toronto. It's Fashion Week!

With Toronto Fashion Week coming to a close, this week’s Behind the Chair interview is fitting, meet, Gaby Burger, fashion and lifestyle blogger of, The Vault Files.

I’ve been reading Gaby’s blog for a few years, and had the pleasure of meeting her in person earlier this year. It was a lovely sunny and warm winter day so I did her hair while I interviewed her, then we went for a lovely walk. I came across The Vault Files one day when I first moved to Toronto, and started reading her blog, I saw her love for this city, and being new here I didn't have much to do or even know what kind of things Toronto had to offer, she would write such lovely things about this city and so I gave it a second chance, now I can't imagine myself living somewhere else. As I began to read her blog weekly, I noticed that we have a few things in common, like, our love of hats, a good leather jacket, and running, just to name a few. When we met in person we hit it off right away! I always love meeting the writers behind a good blog, book, or even social media page ;)

When I met up with Gaby, we decided to do two different hairstyles. The first was look was, loose curls. This is a great go to hairstyle, it works for any and every occasion. I highly recommend investing in a good wand, it makes the curls last longer and they hold better too!

The second hairstyle I decided to do is a top knot, but with a braid on the back of the head. Who doesn’t love a good top knot with a little detail? Enjoy!

1. What inspired you to become a writer?

There are so many hats I get to wear due to the nature of what I do for a living, and writing is just a part of it. I guess more than a writer I’m a blogger, freelancer and content creator. It all really started as a hobby, a way to explore what I had learned after completing my Fashion Marketing diploma a couple of years ago. Back then I thought that it would be a great creative outlet and a way to build a portfolio of some sorts.

2. Where do you get your inspiration from? Any career advice? What are some challenges you've found along the way?

I’m a very visual person so I get easily inspired by natural lighting, nature, photography, patterns, textures, music, friendly smiles, random acts of kindness…I think that life in itself is full of inspiration. I also like to surround myself with inspiring people and I’m lucky that I have great friends who inspire me on many different levels. I firmly believe that positivity and healthy connections and relationships have a huge impact on how we live our life so I try to keep those close to me :)
Because of the nature of what I do, there’s really no time to unplug, so as a freelancer, I think one of the biggest challenges is finding a healthy balance between work and life, especially considering that I have a 5 year old.

3. What is your go-to outfit? Can you share a piece of fashion advice?

I’m a denim girl at heart, so the Canadian tuxedo is definitely one of my favourite outfits to sport. It’s easy, uncomplicated and comfortable. I also love layering, so in a typical day I’m wearing 2 to 3 layers (denim and leather jackets and vests are my go-tos!) As for fashion advice I believe that there are no rules when it comes to dressing. If you feel happy and confident in something then that’s all that matters. If you feel like wearing a dress all day even though you’re just going grocery shopping then go for it. Once you find your personal style make sure your closet is filled with the pieces you reach for over and over; even if it means owning 10 white tee-shirts and nothing else. Makes dressing everyday easier, and when you’re wearing what you like you exude confidence.

4. Favorite quote?

I have a few that I like that I feel express the way of living that I strive for which is living with gratitude, positivity, respect, and empathy.
“Life is 10% what happens and 90% how we react to it” -Dennis P. Kimbro
“If you believe it will work out, you’ll see opportunities, if you believe it won’t you’ll see obstacles” -Wayne Dyer.
“See the light in others and treat them as if that is all you see”  - Wayne Dyer.
“The real gift of gratitude is that the more grateful you are the more present you become” -Robert Holden

5. Favorite way to wear your hair?

I’m pretty low maintenance when it comes to styling my hair. I rarely do anything to it but I do LOVE some soft beachy waves so lately I’ve been trying to style it like that as much as possible. I also love braids, they look chic and you don’t have to worry about how your hair is falling on your face or if it looks good or not, there’s no fuss and I love that!

Head over to The Vault Files and start reading her blog, if you don't already. Hope you've been inspired with balancing work and life, or inspired with some fashion advice, if you've been struggling with what to wear lately. I know I always love a good white tee and jeans, a dress, or of course, I'll be in my running gear ;)

A big thank you to Drew for being our photographer for the day!

Have a great hair day!
